What Not To Wear- Halloween

Halloween is a day reserved for children and grown folks to dress up as anything they want. As kids we dressed up as princesses as super heroes.  Now as adults its like the options have expanded it to include: Sexy nurse, sexy zombie, sexy cat, sexy bus driver, sexy Native American princess, etc.

Everything about these options are problematic.  Why do women’s costumes have to be hypersexual?  But worst than that why do people feel its okay to wear other’s cultures as a costume?   This week’s episode serves as caution for folks to be more careful for their costumes.

P.S. I wish I could prove that this video was recorded a few days before a party took place at UCLA.  Although the party’s theme was to poke fun at  Kanye West and Kim Kardashian some students took this as an opportunity to don black face and perpetuate stereotypes.

Gun Control

After another school shooting, America is left mourning the loss of innocent victims and the conversation of gun control is yet again at the forefront of our discussion. Some say the 2nd Amendment should be left untouched and others say just enforce the law in place. However, it is harder to get a driver’s license than it does to get a gun. Shouldn’t something be done to protect the right to life?

The Pope Takes America

In case you were living under a rock this past week you may have missed the big hoopla about the Pope visiting the United States.  It was a pretty big deal. The first family greeted him at the airport, he made a house call over at Capitol Hill, spoke with the folks at the UN and chilled with the those less fortunate. Outside of having mass and christening babies, he made a few speeches that ruffled people’s feathers.  Okay the truth is, I have no idea if these people were really offended or maybe it was just a slow news cycle.  The topic at hand was “is the Pope too liberal?”

I don’t know why we are so quick to make everything a political agenda. The Pope is not running for president of the world, he’s not out trying to topple governments.  He’s just spreading the gospel. I’m not sure he wants you to “give and give until we are poor” just more like be more conscious and practice true religion of taking care of those less fortunate (James 1:27).  These folks making me preach and it ain’t even Sunday!

Naturally Acceptable

Over the past 10 years there has been a wave of women tossing away  chemicals and rocking their own natural texture hair. That means lots of folks came to a rude awakening when they realized black girls hair was not actually silk and straight—its actually curly, coily and in my instance puffy. Some folks had a conniption—old black folks who didn’t understand why anyone would step out the house looking unkempt, employers who thought it unprofessional to walk around making political statement in office and the general population who equated straight hair with beauty because lets face it—our beauty standards are based on the presence of Eurocentric features—straight hair, fair skin, small nose.

As people grow more used to seeing variation of textured hair, there are a few things you may need to know. Consider this weekly update as your 5 things on what not to say, do or assume to/about a woman with natural hair.

I wanna know your thoughts! What else should folks know about the natural hair movement?
